Lung Function Tests
Lung function testing [spirometry] is used to measure respiratory function
and monitor exposure to lung hazards such as respiratory sensitisers and irritants – these can include hazards such as dusts, fumes, gases, vapours and mists. Lung function testing is also useful for establishing a baseline measurement prior to any potential exposure to respiratory hazards. In addition, lung function testing can be used as a part of a ‘well and healthy at work’ assessment – i.e. lung conditions that affect functional capacity
Frequency of testing: baseline and ongoing (generally annual) post-accident or exposure to respiratory hazards.
A lung function screening consists of:
Lung function using spirometer to measure some key lung indicators of FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC, PEF.
Lung function test and questionnaire to determine the following:
Lung symptoms i.e. wheeze, shortness of breath
Smoking history
Current and past respiratory history for medical conditions, injury, or illness
Records exposure history, current and past
Identifies any preexisting lung conditions such as asthma & pulmonary disease.
The spirometry results in combination with the questionnaire can help identify any restrictive or obstructive respiratory disorders.
